The schools has to follow evaluation standards established by the state and are obliged to participate in the statewide tests and disclose their results. Charter Schools

Charter schools operates like a hybrid of public schools and private schools. They are publicly funded but run independently from the school districts. It is governed by an independent board of trustees, draws up its own curriculums and rules of operation, and is held accountable.

Even though the admission is open to all and not limited to students within Hoboken school district, yet admission is lottery based. In the lottery procedure, students with currently enrolled siblings have higher priority and then students living in Hoboken. Each charter school has a very limited openings but receives more than ten times applications. the 2018-2019 school year, HoLa 582 received applicants but only had 44 potential open spots. Out of 44 openings, 19 of which will be filled by students with siblings currently enrolled in HoLa.

Private schools

Private schools sometimes are preferred by parents. Private schools operate on their own funding, coming from parents through tuition, grants, donations, and etc.. They usually offers smaller class sizes. They offer a more flexible curriculum, including extracurricular activities, International Baccalaureate programs, Advanced Placement courses, and gifted programs. Tuition can be expensive and some religious schools could be cheaper because of extra funding from religious organizations.

We have the impression that private school students score higher on standardized tests and college entrance exams. Statistics on private schools are not as complete as public schools. They are not subject to the disclosure requirements that public schools comply to.

Private schools can be very selective. Private schools are not required to accept every child and often require extensive applications that involve interviews, essays, and testing. For example, they could choose students not only based on their academic achievement but also their ethnicity, gender, and religion or special attributes of their parents.
